Haiwaan takes ₹5.5 crore in two days as Mirzapur holds ahead
The Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan thriller took ₹3 crore on opening day and ₹2.5 crore on Saturday — no growth into the weekend. Mirzapur: The Movie is outperforming it in its second week.
Haiwaan has taken ₹5.5 crore in India across its first two days, after collecting ₹3 crore on its opening day and ₹2.5 crore on Saturday, according to figures from Sacnilk.
The second day showed no growth on the first — unusual for a Hindi release moving into a Saturday, when a film that has connected normally rises.
The occupancy pattern
On its opening day the film showed around 5% occupancy in the morning, over 12% during afternoon and evening shows, and over 18% at night.
On Saturday overall occupancy was 12.77%, with the highest figure in the evening at 16%.
The night-time peak on day one falling back by Saturday evening is the detail that matters. Opening-night audiences are the ones who had already decided to come; the Saturday figure is closer to a test of word of mouth.
What it is up against
Mirzapur: The Movie, released the previous week, is outperforming Haiwaan in its second week.
A new release losing to a holdover in that holdover's second week is the clearest available measure of the reception, since the incumbent has already exhausted its own opening audience.
The film
Haiwaan reunites Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan on screen for the first time since Tashan, 17 years ago. The two have previously worked together on Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Aarzoo, Tu Chor Main Sipahi and Keemat, among others.
Directed by Priyadarshan, it is a Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Oppam.
Saif Ali Khan plays a blind man and Akshay Kumar a killer. The psychological thriller also features Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in significant roles.
A different Priyadarshan
Boman Irani, who has worked with the director on two previous films, said being directed by him in a thriller changed his understanding of the filmmaker's craft.
Priyadarshan is most widely associated with comedy in Hindi cinema, which is the contrast Irani's remark points at. Oppam, the source film, is a thriller.
The remake question
A Hindi remake of a Malayalam film arrives with a particular difficulty: the audience most likely to seek out a Priyadarshan thriller is also the audience most likely to have seen Oppam.
That is a structural challenge rather than a judgement on this film, and the first-weekend numbers do not on their own settle which factor is operating.
Where it stands
₹5.5 crore across two days, flat into Saturday, behind a second-week incumbent. The Sunday figure will indicate whether the weekend builds or the opening was the peak.
