Ferran Torres hat-trick opens PSG's defence against his old club's rivals

Suleiman Camara pulled one back for Slovan in the 58th minute, and Fabián Ruiz Pena sealed the win with PSG's sixth three minutes from time.

What it does and does not tell us

The margin should be read for what it is. Slovan Bratislava are not the standard of opponent PSG will face after Christmas, and six goals in an opening league-phase fixture measures the distance between seeds rather than the readiness of a defending champion.

What it does indicate is appetite. Sides that have won a trophy twice consecutively often begin the third attempt flat. PSG did not.

Winning this competition twice running is rare. A third would place this side among the very few teams to have sustained that in a tournament restructured specifically to make dominance harder.

They arrive at it having beaten Arsenal on penalties in last season's final. Arsenal also won on the opening night, 1-0 at Napoli.

Stuttgart's Ermedin Demirovic scored a hat-trick inside 12 first-half minutes against Viking Stavanger, who were making their first appearance in the league phase. Demirovic opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a touch at the near post; Zlatko Tripic levelled two minutes later with a left-footed finish from a swift counter-attack; Demirovic restored the lead in the 26th and completed the hat-trick with a hooked volley six minutes after that.

"For me personally it was the perfect start and also for the team as a whole," Demirovic told Dazn.

Borussia Dortmund beat Villarreal 3-2, Real Betis came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Lille, and AEK Athens beat LASK 1-0 through a Razvan Marin free-kick.
